Updates to the SCV system
New Zealand’s new self-contained vehicles (SCV) system began on 7 December 2023.
Changes were made to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006 and the Freedom Camping Act 2011 to establish a new regulatory system for certifying and registering SCVs used for freedom camping. The changes were made to strengthen the rules around freedom camping and protect Aotearoa New Zealand’s natural environment. The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayer’s Board is the regulator of the SCV system.

- Camping NZ app
The Camping NZ app takes the hassle out of finding a campsite or campground while travelling in New Zealand. Its in-app map is preloaded with over 4000 council-approved camping locations across the country and can be downloaded for use offline.
